Who you are at 3.5
October 4, 2010
Safiyah. You are three and a half. Very social – a head turner. You make friends everywhere we go. Last night we were in a sweet shop in Carmel and you were picking out the candy you wanted. Some ladies came in and were adoring your springy curls and how cute you are.. then you over heard them talking about how if they ate this much sugar tonight they’d be up all night. You went over to the shelf and picked out a nice candy and gave it to the woman. She said, “Is this for me?” You respond: ”Yes, its for you–for the morning!” You are very observant and a good listener (when you want to be).
You also met a man named Scott in an Art gallery who was talking about the meaning of life. He said that we constantly look outside of ourselves to blame others for the things we don’t want to take power of. Personally, I am trying everyday, consciously, to follow that philosophy. I am trying to forego my habituated response of blaming someone or something for what I am experiencing, and imagining my role in it. How can I change to change the situation? There is much wisdom in this.
As of recent.. your favorite song to sing is Andrea Bocelli’s Time to Say Goodbye. You sing it very well, not knowing all the words, but faking them brilliantly! The other day at Uncle Andrew’s house in SF, you stood up on a wooden footstool (stage) and sang it in the candlelit kitchen. Even Uncle Greg commented on how impressed he was that you were in perfect pitch the whole way through! Your musical talent and ability to mimic a melody exactly has been natural to you since birth, since you first sang your lullaby (hummed it) at 8 months. We were impressed… an entire melody in perfect key, before you were speaking! We’ll see what’s next.. you said that the instrument you’d play if given a chance would be the horn.
Your favorite thing to do is change clothing –especially when you can change into costumes. Favorite costumes: ariel (little mermaid), spiderman, dhanno (from bollywood classic “Gunga Jumna,” Fresh Beat Band, and Cinderella.
You are now asking me to scratch your back and help button up a new dress for you –4th time changing since we got home about an hour ago.. so here i go. love love love u.
